Have fun! But this is for informational purposes only, NOT a substitute for proper, hands-on lessons by a qualified instructor. Read important guidelines.
Almost anyone can drive off-road by following a few simple rules and using common sense.
- First, off-pavement driving is best done with finesse. If you want to drive home after a fun day off-pavement, you'll want to drive safely and, under most conditions, as slowly as possible.
- Second, TreadLightly! on public and private land, and always make sure you have permission to travel in private areas. Respecting the rights and property of others is essential to driving off-road. Enjoy your trip but leave the area in the same condition, or even better, than when you arrived.
- Third, always wear—and have everyone in the vehicle wear—seatbelts while driving on or off-pavement. Do not stand-up or allow passengers to stand-up in a moving vehicle. Keep an especially close eye on children, as they might not realize that this is a requirement when off-road.
- Fourth, never drink alcoholic beverages and drive. No alcoholic beverages are allowed on ANY trail ride for consumption by Jeep Jamboree participants, and violators will be removed from the Jamboree promptly. Driving impaired by alcohol is dangerous to you, your vehicle, and other nearby people and vehicles.
- Fifth, know your vehicle’s capabilities and limitations. Follow the Jeep Jamboree Guidebook’s listing of trail difficulties and consult with your local coordinators and guides before your trip to match your vehicle to an appropriate difficulty level. Choosing a correct match for your vehicle will give you the best combination of challenges and safety.
- Sixth, and most importantly, know your own capabilities and limitations. The best technique is to be smooth and only drive as fast as necessary. And there’s absolutely no harm in deciding not to attempt an obstacle if you or your vehicle aren’t ready.
Your best off-road experience will be one that you remember as fun AND safe. Driving your vehicle is a fun experience BUT it requires your full attention at all times. Once you have you’ve learned these basics, all you’ll need is practice.
We'll add more of these tips & techniques as time permits.
