SNOWSHOE, WV — Perched nearly a mile high in the Alleghenies, Snowshoe Mountain Resort is home to 11,000 acres of pristine woodlands. Breathtaking vistas are found throughout the challenging off- road trails. A stop for lunch at a fire-tower lookout is your opportunity to take home your own postcard picture. Steep downhill trails and boulders along with some mud make for a great time. The food is great as are the friends and memories you’ll make.

HAMMONTON, NJ — Centered around Batsto Historic Village, many of the trails date back to the 17th century when they were used to transport bog ore to be made into cannon balls for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Since then, many more trails have been established by the Forest Service in this area known as the Pine Barrens, encompassing one million acres of pine forests, cedar swamps, and streams. Water flows from the Kirkwood- Cohansey aquifer — one of the largest on the continent.

NELSON COUNTY, VA — At one time, the historic Oak Ridge Estate was one of the grandest properties in America. Today it’s the largest private estate under restoration and open to the public in Virginia. Oak Ridge offers nearly 5,000 acres of expansive vistas and 250-year-old architecture. At its heart is an elegant mansion which is available for tours. You’ll not only explore the living history of Oak Ridge but the natural beauty of rural central Virginia.

CRANDON, WI — Venture through heavily forested trails, passing creeks, ponds, and lakes that dot this northern backcountry. Discovered in 1634 by French explorer Jean Nicolet, the 661,000-acre Nicolet National Forest surrounds the community of Crandon. You’ll go deep into beautiful forest on old logging roads and abandoned railroads. Skirt the headwater swamps of the Peshtigo, Wolf, and Wisconsin Rivers. Keep an eye out for plenty of indigenous wildlife, including deer, beaver, bald eagles, loons, foxes, and black bear. The region is also a paradise for paddlers and fishers alike.

MOAB, UT — Huddled in a far-off valley between pinnacles of red rock, Moab is one of the most breathtaking 4x4 destinations in the nation — if not the world. Many movies, including a host of John Ford Wild West classics, have been filmed in these otherworldly environs. A high percentage of the maintained and primitive roads are actually remnants of the area’s uranium
prospecting and mining past. Potash Road just outside Moab features petroglyphs and several dinosaur tracks. Be sure to take in the spectacular terrain of neighboring Arches National Park and Canyonlands

BETHEL, ME — Experience deep colors in the deep woods. The mountains of western Maine are known for their autumn splendor when vibrant colors paint a stunning backdrop. Under the colorful canopy lays hundreds of miles of mountain trails and scenic backroads. The “Chili Trail” crosses water, rocks, and a log bridge before a lunch of homemade chili. Other trails lead to a granite-topped mountain with spectacular views. There’s also local mountain biking and canoeing to enjoy, and the Bethel Inn offers golf, tennis, and health club facilities.
